Congratulations on the choice of Laureates for the Nobel Peace Prize 2014
The board of Norwegian OMEP ( Organisation Mondiale pour l’ Education Préscolaire ) decided at our meeting in Bergen 16.10.2014 to send a greeting to the Norwegian Nobel Committee for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi. OMEP’s overall objective is to contribute to world peace, where the struggle for children’s rights is an integral part. We are therefore particularly pleased that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize goes to individuals who work for promoting the right of all children, especially female children, to education as laid out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The work of both Nobel Peace Prize Laureates for children’s right to a dignified childhood and access to education is fully in line with the values OMEP is built on.
Historically, OMEP was started in 1948, an international organisation to provide young children with opportunities for education and a dignified childhood. Today it has members from over 70 countries. The Norwegian branch of the organisation was started in 1949 under the leadership of Åse Gruda Skard, and has since then worked to further the optimal development of young children in the family, in educational institutions and in the community.
