Resilience is the ability to adapt well in the face of significant sources of stress and recover from setbacks. In other words, it is the quality of “bouncing back” (Ginsburg & Jablow, 2015). Ginsburg and Jablow (2015) identify “7 Crucial Cs” that resilience constitutes, including competence (ability to handle situations effectively), confidence (belief in one’s own abilities), connection (close ties to family, friends, school, and community), character (sense of right and wrong), contribution (understanding of the importance of personal contribution), coping (ability to cope effectively with stress), and control (ability to control the outcomes of their decision).

The first phase of the project consisted of the identification and dissemination of good practices on this topic. OMEP called for such good practices worldwide and attracted 36 project entries from 18 countries. Seven projects were selected as having demonstrated outstanding qualities and potential, and the representatives of these projects were invited to present their projects at the first Play and Resilience Symposium during the 2016 OMEP World Conference held in July 2016.
Project Concept Note
The second phase focuses on capacity development of key stakeholders and development of culturally appropriate resource materials to support young children in disadvantaged communities of China and sub-Saharan Africa, so that they develop attitudes, competencies and skills relevant to resilience.
