Special message to Myanmar from OMEP VP Asia Pacific Region

Udomluck Kulapichitr

In order to show solidarity with the situation of children in Myanmar due to the political and social crisis of recent months, the Vice Presidency of the Asia Pacific Region has sent the following message on behalf of EXCO:

OMEP acknowledges Myanmar’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Myanmar acceded to in 1999. In July 2019, Myanmar enacted a new Child Rights Law. These rights include the rights to protection, participation, peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. We also acknowledge Myanmar’s ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict (OPAC), in September 2019. We are concerned that children are being disproportionately affected by the on-going unrest in Myanmar. We call upon Myanmar to ensure that all children’s rights are protected under all circumstances, based on the guiding principles of the Convention and OPAC.
